Nestled in the mountains 2,500 feet above the Indian Ocean, Golden Tulip Holland Resort Batu offers a modern, sustainability-minded resort experience which promotes a deeper connection to the natural elements of Batu, Indonesia. Batu was a declining regional tourism destination in East Java. The mayor and client wished to rejuvenate area tourism.

On an elevated site with clear views to 3 active volcanoes, the project was conceived as a luxury resort that captured the amazing sunrise views. The buildings were organized along an enclosed allee where a sculptural outdoor wedding chapel and a large public porch defined each of its axial ends. The allee conformed to the natural topography of the site and featured a linear cascading water feature, providing guests the soothing experience from the sound of water as they strolled alongside the flow.

The resort took advantage of the tropical climate, using natural ventilation to cool the vast majority of its public spaces, with individual condensers servicing the condotel units on demand. Deep roof overhangs provided the condotel units with protection from the elements while maintaining the stunning mountain vistas. The amenity areas were protected by solar screens and low canopies to allow the lobby concourse to remain completely open to the entry court and be part of the outdoor. Since its completion, the regional tourism interest has steadily grown in numbers and economic value.
